Amy moved to San Diego in 2016 to pursue a life by the ocean and a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Climate Science and Policy at UCSD. After just one year she decided to stay. Part of that was due to her involvement with Ocean Connectors, a nonprofit that connects youth in National City and Nayarit MX to coastal wildlife. While volunteering on whale watching and coastal restoration field trips Amy saw firsthand the importance of community-based work that invests in youth.
Amy’s own interest in climate change was sparked at a young age but wasn’t fully realized until she encountered sea level rise while teaching high school in Miami. There Amy came to understand social justice as central to effectively addressing a wide range of social issues. In 2019, Amy returned to UCSD to pursue a PhD in Sociology where she studied the ongoing crisis of property casualty insurers leaving the California market. She mastered out of the program to pursue a career in community-based work with the view that climate change is a social justice issue with social solutions.
